Wedding Ceremony Location Selection - 10 Questions to Consider

You just got engaged (...congratulations!), and you are checking out venues for your wedding ceremony and reception.  After all, you cannot set the date until you have secured the place for your your wedding.

A recent trend for wedding ceremonies it to have the ceremony at the same place as the reception. Doing so may save money. The venue may have a dramatic setting that you would love for your a gazebo or lakeside view. For some couples and their families, having the ceremony and reception in the same place makes for a less stressful wedding day.

As you make your tour of potential wedding event spaces, keep these 10 questions in mind as you picture your ceremony in the space they offer. There is no right or wrong answer to these questions. They are intended to help you know what is important to you and help you think of things you might not have considered.

1. Do you like the layout of the ceremony location? Is there enough space for all your guests? Do you like way the aisle is positioned for the wedding party to enter? Is there enough space for your wedding party? Do you have to go up or down stairs in your long dress? Is the venue staff flexible if you would like rearrange their usual ceremony set-up?

2. When you look at romantic outdoor ceremony locations in the fall or winter, remember it could be really hot for your summer wedding. Will your guests be sitting, perhaps wilting, in the direct sun? If your wedding day is sunny, will the sun be in your eyes at the time of the ceremony?

3. For an outdoor evening wedding, do they spray for mosquitoes? When does their automatic outdoor sprinkling system go on?

4. Also, if the ceremony is outside, will your procession be over difficult surfaces like gravel or grass? Think of high-heeled shoes sinking into the lawn!

5. If you decide on an outdoor ceremony, do you like their alternative indoor space if there is bad weather?

6. Do they have a sound system and experienced staff to operate it? Do they have convenient power source for a sound system that is brought in?

7. How does the venue handle noise from other activities at their location? Look and listen as you stand in the ceremony space. Do you hear lawn-mowers, traffic from a nearby highway, overhead airplanes or helicopters, thumping music from the DJ at the other party in the building, or clattering dishes from the kitchen or a hidden service hallway? Is there a loud fountain nearby?

8. Will the ceremony location look good in your pictures? Things to avoid are back lighting, unsightly exit signs, poorly hung drapes, tacky silk flower arrangements, a weather-beaten gazebo...well, you get the idea.

9. Does the venue provide staff support for the ceremony? Do they invite guests to take their seats at the appointed start time, put out programs and your post-ceremony bubbles or confetti, assist elderly or handicapped guests find their seats, and help your musicians and officiant with their set-up needs (lighting, sound system, etc.)?

10. Do they manage your wedding procession by lining up the wedding party, giving cues to the musicians and officiant, and adjusting the bride's dress just before she goes down the aisle?

Good luck as you make your choice about where to have your wedding ceremony, and then get to work on making the ceremony itself a memorable and meaningful part of your wedding day.
